The University of Plymouth commissioned EqualEngineers to spearhead their ambitious initiative titled “Embedding Systemic Inclusion for Neurodivergent and Disabled Engineering Students”. This project was designed to enhance the inclusivity of the educational environment for engineering students who identify as neurodivergent or disabled, ensuring they have equal opportunities and support to thrive academically and personally.
Our collaboration with Plymouth involved a series of targeted focus groups with students from the aforementioned demographics. These sessions were instrumental in gathering insightful feedback and experiences directly from the students affected by the current campus climate. The valuable information collected was not only enlightening but also formed the backbone of our comprehensive report, which was later presented to faculty and staff during the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Staff Day.
In addition to these focus groups, EqualEngineers facilitated a range of training sessions for academic, support, and technical staff. These training sessions were focused on key areas such as diversity and inclusion, the critical importance of fostering a psychologically safe working culture, and practical strategies for staff to implement these ideals effectively within their day-to-day interactions and teaching methodologies.
Moreover, our engagement with the university extended to supporting a DEI conference run by the school. This conference served as a platform for broader engagement and learning among the faculty and provided an opportunity to showcase progressive strategies and practices that could be adopted school-wide.
