Success for Black Engineers

EqualEngineers were delighted to work with King’s College London on the ground-breaking Success for Black Engineers project. This initiative addresses the issue of lower academic attainment among Black engineering students at both undergraduate and school levels by providing targeted support and peer mentoring.

Project overview

At the heart of this project is our commitment to empowering students through tailored academic mentoring. We achieved this by training existing Black community members and minority ethnic staff at King’s College London to serve as mentors. These mentors play a crucial role in offering guidance and support, helping students navigate the complexities of their academic experience. Our expertise in mentoring has been pivotal in supporting these relationships to foster an effective learning environment.

EqualEngineers’ contribution extends beyond individual mentoring. We have been managing and supported peer-to-peer mentoring relationships and ensure that these interactions were aligned with the students’ needs. Additionally, our team organised and ran a comprehensive schedule of virtual events throughout the year.

This project also serves a dual purpose by enhancing King’s College London’s understanding of the unique experiences and challenges faced by Black engineering students. This insight is critical for the university to develop more inclusive policies and practices.

Overall, the Success for Black Engineers project not only aims to boost academic outcomes but also supports the broader personal development and wellbeing of students. By recognising that academic success cannot be isolated from a student’s overall experience, this initiative promotes a more holistic approach to education and growth.
