As Black History Month draws to a close, we take a moment to celebrate the impactful initiatives and events hosted throughout October to honour and uplift Black leaders in STEM. This month has offered us the chance to spotlight exceptional individuals and foster powerful conversations that champion diversity across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It has been a journey filled with inspiration, learning, and community, highlighting the indispensable contributions of Black professionals to these fields and their potential to drive further progress.

Leaders in STEM

Throughout October, we highlighted the achievements of three pioneering individuals who are transforming the STEM landscape, serving as role models and paving the way for future generations.

Dr A-Marie Imafidon, co-founder of Stemettes, has been a visionary force in increasing the participation of women—particularly Black women—in STEM fields. Her work with Stemettes has inspired a new wave of young talent, creating more accessible pathways for young women to engage with and excel in science and technology.

Dr Imafidon’s efforts have led to countless opportunities for mentorship, hands-on experiences, and career guidance that have opened doors for those who might otherwise face barriers in pursuing STEM careers. Her influence extends well beyond the lab or the classroom, setting a strong example of leadership and commitment to inclusivity.

Alongside her, Mark Martin, co-founder of UKBlackTech, is making tremendous strides in the UK technology sector, advocating for greater representation of Black professionals within digital spaces. Through his work, Martin aims to bridge the digital skills gap, pushing for inclusive educational programmes that prepare students and professionals alike to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy. By promoting diverse talent within tech, he is also addressing critical issues around innovation and equity, creating a more vibrant, inclusive technology sector. His leadership and influence resonate with the need to make the digital landscape an open space for all, providing role models and practical solutions for a more diverse workforce.

Chi Onwurah, MP and Shadow Minister for Science, Research & Innovation, has also been a steadfast advocate for diversity within STEM, working tirelessly to ensure that science policy is inclusive and reflects the needs of all communities across the UK. Her position in government allows her to effect meaningful change by addressing systemic challenges in STEM and ensuring that underrepresented groups have opportunities to contribute to and benefit from advancements in science and research. As a public servant and a scientist herself, Onwurah’s advocacy for diversity in STEM is both professional and deeply personal, reflecting a commitment to a field that values inclusivity and drives change at the policy level.

Black History Month – “Reclaiming Narratives”

A highlight of our Black History Month programming was the joint webinar, “Reclaiming Narratives,” held in collaboration with the REACH Network and InterEngineering. This inspiring event brought together an exceptional panel of speakers who shared personal journeys, challenges, and insights on redefining success and resilience in engineering.

Chinwe Odili, an award-winning offshore structural engineer and Chair of the ECITB’s Innov8 Group, captivated attendees with her journey in offshore engineering, a field where resilience, innovation, and safety are paramount. Chinwe shared her commitment to integrity within the industry and the importance of bringing diverse voices into the spaces where critical decisions are made.

Joining her was Izzy Okosun, a transformative business leader who serves as the Diaspora Editor at Egogo News Hub and is the founder of NourishByDezign, an organisation blending corporate strategy with social impact. Izzy’s work addresses key societal issues such as economic inequality, diversity, and sustainability, merging her passion for wellness and design with a deep understanding of how business and social change intersect. Her insights during the webinar illuminated the potential of inclusive business practices to drive both operational excellence and meaningful societal progress. Her approach emphasises the significance of corporate responsibility, reflecting her commitment to enhancing diversity and fostering spaces where diverse talent is recognised and uplifted.

Acknowledging the Leadership Behind “Reclaiming Narratives”

A special thank you is owed to our co-chairs—Tyler Simmonite and Ash Kala from the REACH Network, alongside Patrick Murray Whitham and Fiona Connor from InterEngineering. Their leadership and dedication made this event a tremendous success, fostering an environment where authentic conversations and community building could thrive. Their collaborative efforts have been instrumental in providing a platform that celebrates Black professionals’ achievements while encouraging more inclusive practices within our industry.

A Commitment Beyond Black History Month

This Black History Month has underscored the profound importance of recognising and celebrating the contributions of Black professionals in STEM. Each event and initiative highlighted how diversity strengthens our industries, sparking innovation, resilience, and a deeper understanding of the role inclusion plays in scientific and technological progress. As we move forward, these conversations remind us to continue advocating for a more inclusive and diverse STEM community, one that values every voice and welcomes talent from all backgrounds. Thank you to everyone who joined us this month in recognising and celebrating the achievements of Black British leaders in STEM. Let us carry this momentum forward, ensuring that diversity remains at the heart of our work, our organisations, and our vision for the future of STEM.
