The conversation delved into the importance of recognising and celebrating South Asian identity in the workplace. The co-chairs reflected on the previous year’s theme, “Free to Be Me,” discussing how it encouraged individuals to examine whether they were able to fully express or had to suppress their identity at work.
This year’s theme, however, brought a stronger focus on heritage and the historical migration of South Asian communities to the UK, including references to key moments such as the Great War, World War II, and the East African expulsion of South Asians. These reflections helped place the South Asian experience within a broader historical and cultural context, while drawing attention to its long-standing impact on British life and industry.
The discussion was rich with personal stories, cultural reflections, and calls to action, emphasising the continued importance of representation, cultural awareness, and safe spaces in engineering and beyond.
