University of Portsmouth - Consulting Project

In 2022, the University of Portsmouth identified a pressing need within the Faculty of Technology to enhance support for staff dealing with students facing mental health challenges. This situation was further complicated by the presence of prejudiced views among some students, adding layers of complexity to the staff’s support roles.

Project Overview

EqualEngineers was commissioned to develop a tailored response that not only addressed these immediate challenges but also fostered a broader inclusive culture within the faculty. Our approach was multi-faceted, focusing on the intersection of psychological safety, student mental health, and proactive management of problematic behaviours.

We devised a bespoke training programme that was delivered to over 60 academic staff across the disciplines of engineering, computing, mathematics, and physics. The programme provided staff with the latest data on student mental health, effective tools for addressing and modifying problematic behaviours, and strategies to ensure psychological safety and inclusivity within their interactions and teaching practices.

Additionally, our initiative included the creation of a detailed follow-up report. This report mapped the existing staff culture and pinpointed areas for further development and improvement within the faculty. It served as a foundational document that informed subsequent initiatives aimed at enhancing the supportive capacities of the staff, ensuring that the faculty could better manage and mitigate the complexities of mental health issues among its student body.
