19 November 2025 marked an unforgettable milestone for the EqualEngineers Pathways Programme as ten of our mentees spent a full, immersive day at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) headquarters in Culham. Hosted by one of our long-standing and valued industry partners, the day offered a rare and inspiring behind-the-scenes look into the world of fusion energy, robotics, and cutting-edge engineering.
From the moment our group arrived at the main gate at 9:00am, the atmosphere was buzzing with enthusiasm. With mentees representing a range of engineering interests, including mechanical, electrical, software, and civil engineering, the visit provided something meaningful for everyone.
A Warm Welcome and Introductions
The day began with a short introduction from the UKAEA team, followed by a brief welcome from EqualEngineers, and a quick check-in around photography before capturing a group photo outside the iconic B1 building.

One of the most valuable moments of the morning came during the introductions, where our students met with UKAEA mentors for one-to-one discussions. These conversations helped set the tone for the day: building connections, asking questions, and exploring career aspirations within engineering.
Hands-On Engineering: RACE Activities
A major highlight of the morning was the 75-minute session with RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments). Here, mentees got hands-on with two engaging activities:
- SPOT Activity
- Through Wall Manipulator Activity

These exercises showcased the practical applications of robotics in extreme and hazardous environments areas where UKAEA leads global innovation. The group also visited the AIM TU Cell, offering participants a glimpse into the precision and complexity behind UKAEA’s robotic systems.
Touring the Joint European Torus (JET)
After lunch came one of the most anticipated parts of the day: a guided tour of the Joint European Torus (JET) the world’s largest and most powerful operational tokamak.
The 75-minute tour included:
- The JET vessel
- The Remote Handling (RH) Control Room
- The JET Control Room
For many mentees, seeing JET up close was a defining moment, bringing their university studies and personal interests to life. With JET recently concluding operations, this was a truly special opportunity to witness its legacy and impact on future fusion projects.
Following a short break, the UKAEA Early Careers team delivered a dedicated session on graduate schemes, internships, and apprenticeship opportunities, a much-welcomed chance for mentees to gain clarity on entry routes into the organisation and ask direct questions about applications.

Closing the Day with Inspiration
The day wrapped up with closing remarks and reflections before our group departed at 4:00pm. It was clear that the experience had made a powerful impact, sparking curiosity, building confidence, and deepening mentees’ understanding of what a career in fusion and advanced engineering could look like.
A Huge Thank You
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone at UKAEA for hosting us, sharing their expertise, and giving our mentees such an exceptional insight into the future of clean energy and engineering innovation. Experiences like this are at the heart of the EqualEngineers Pathways Programme, empowering the next generation and helping to attract, develop, and retain diverse talent across the engineering sector.
